In its second year of implementation (2010-2011), the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) in partnership with the Dr. James H. Naylor School, targeted 17 families from seven different countries. These families are from Albania, Bosnia, Columbia, Iraq, Italy, Poland and Mexico and were most in need of literacy services. Each year consists of 2 semesters in which the project focuses on inter-generational instruction and support to increase the literacy of parents to promote the literacy abilities of their children. Priority is given to parents who are English Language Learners in need of ESL Adult Education. The Family Literacy Project links the essential components of family literacy: adult education, parent education, the education of children and parent and child time. Connecticut State Senator, John W. Fonfara, visited the program in November and assisted with introducing the families to Thanksgiving traditions.
During the first semester, Sam’s Food Stores chose to adopt the program for last year’s holiday season. All families received gifts. Click images to enlarge.
